Prof. Tuten, presently serving as Director of the Emory Program in Linguistics, has been an active member of the
Program since arriving at Emory in 1996. His interest in linguistics developed first while growing up in the
multidialectal environment of Savannah, Georgia, and subsequently during overseas experiences in Colombia,
France and Spain. He received an M.A. in Spanish and a Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics from the University of
Wisconsin-Madison. His research focuses on language change and history (historical sociolinguistics),
particularly the question of how and why linguistic changes take place when and where they do. His book,
Koineization in Medieval Spanish (2003, Berlin & New York: Mouton de Gruyter), examined the effects of
dialect mixing, speech accommodation and dialect/language acquisition on the development of medieval Castilian phonology
and morphosyntax. His present projects -- including an ongoing study of language, discourse and politeness in medieval
and early modern Spain -- focus on the connections between social, cultural, and linguistic change. While most of
Prof. Tuten's research concentrates on Spanish and the Romance languages, he also does comparative work on other
languages such as English.
Prof. Tuten has long had a strong interest in the fields of applied linguistics, language pedagogy and
intercultural communication. He is principal author of the intermediate Spanish language and culture textbook Fuentes:
Lectura y redacción (3rd ed., 2005, Boston: Houghton Mifflin).
Prof. Tuten teaches courses in linguistics in both the Program in Linguistics and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.
